A Mind At Work

The Creative Process in Action

James Joyce found his inspiration everywhere – particularly in the people and places of the city that was once his home, and (what he called) the ‘chattering dialogue’ on every corner of every street.

Here we take a closer look at Joyce’s creative process. His writing notebooks, early drafts and first publications give us an insight into the complex and creative mind of a genius who believed he could do anything with words. And remember, adults – even Joyce used crayons!

Every literary masterpiece starts somewhere, often with a blank page and a good idea. From the stars of Irish literature to writers just setting out on their creative journey, every writer is looking for inspiration. Many find it in James Joyce – he played with language, challenged rules and created new words. From irreverence came creativity.

In the centre of this room you can hear the voices of Irish writers talking about what Joyce means to them, as well as what it takes to put words on the page – and we invite every visitor to begin writing a few lines of their own.
