Literature is a window to the world, helping us imagine places and people far beyond our own homes. Writers move between cities, meeting other writers and encountering new ideas, arguments and conversations. Literary Cities featured international cities with strong literary connections to Ireland and Irish writers.
Paris is a city that has always drawn writers in search of inspiration. The city has provided a new home to many Irish authors and continues to offer creative inspiration. Discover streets that are alive with the animated conversations of writers, philosophers and artists.
The exhibition drew from the lives and works of Irish authors in Paris: Oscar Wilde after his imprisonment, James Joyce and his endeavours to get Ulysses published by Sylvia Beach at Shakespeare and Company, and Samuel Beckett’s life, writing and involvement with the French Resistance. Audio elements included readings of Beckett’s poetry, evocative sounds of a Paris café, and other sounds designed to transport visitors to the streets of literary Paris.
