The Edna O'Brien Young Writers Award programme

Learning at MoLI: A Reflection

Catalogued here are just a few of MoLI’s impactful learning programmes over the last seven years. Each one reflects our commitment to making literature accessible, engaging, and alive for readers and writers of all ages.

Edna O'Brien Young Writers Award

From 2020 to 2024, the Edna O’Brien Young Writers Award ran as an annual, week-long immersive residency for 15 enthusiastic teenage writers from across Ireland. Students stayed in UCD residences, and worked throughout the week at the museum with a notable writer/mentor, met established writers, publishers and literary academics. The programme culminated in the publication of an anthology of student work produced during the week, as well as a creative writing day with the year's mentor for longlisted young writers. Over five years, 174 student writers came to MoLI to forge ahead with their writing, and we are delighted to have been part of their journeys.

Wandering and Wondering

Wandering and Wondering at MoLI was a series of creative workshops with Catherine McAuley National School, taking place in October and November 2025. Each week, students embarked on imaginative journeys around the museum, using stories, poetry, and creative activities to spark ideas. They explored different parts of the museum—from the learning room and gardens to the exhibitions—while inventing stories, poems, postcards, and even their own personal guides to MoLI.

At the final session, we had the opportunity to capture the students' experience on video and celebrate the wonderful work they created during their time with us.

City of Dublin ETB x MoLI

How can MoLI, a literature museum, evolve beyond being a museum that honours great writers of the past and be a living laboratry, a place where everyone feels welcome to read, learn, and create their own stories?

This programme examined how adults with unmet literacy needs interact with a literary museum. Facilitated by artist Fiona Bolger, Adult Literacy Coordinator Martha Young, and Learning Manager Lily Cahill, the project entered its second phase in winter 2024. This stage involved creative writing workshops, alongside an active evaluation of the museum and gardens, guided directly by learner feedback.

The project aimed to identify best practices and effective methods for engaging adults with literacy needs, while also exploring how museums can serve as dynamic, inclusive, and learner-centred spaces for education and inspiration for everyone.

Eirstat 1: Ireland's First Satellite

‘All Ways Home’ is a collaborative poem created by students from across Ireland and etched onto EIRSAT-1, Ireland’s first satellite, launched by the European Space Agency in 2023. Designed and built by students and staff at University College Dublin, the satellite carries the poem on its Antenna Deployment Module — the component responsible for communications.

The poem was developed through the Space Poem Project, an outreach initiative led by UCD in partnership with Museum of Literature Ireland and the JCSP Demonstration Library Project. School pupils nationwide collaborated with UCD MA Creative Writing students in a series of workshops.

Artwork for the poem was designed by Emer O’Boyle (UCD Parity Studios), and the text was laser-etched with EFJ Engineering in collaboration with the EIRSAT-1 team.

Curated by Assoc. Prof. Paul Perry with Professors Ian Davidson, Jessica Traynor, and Chiamaka Enyi-Amadi, the project also resulted in a three-minute animated film illustrated by Alan Dunne, with music and sound production by Phil Brookes and produced by Jane Allen.
